Cousteau

Cousteau is Altertable’s autonomous product investigation agent. Connect the data you want it to investigate. Start with one source and add others as needed. The guides below explain how to send data, connect an existing database, or add business context.

Set up an investigation

Cousteau is enabled when an environment is created. It needs relevant data before it can investigate. Open Cousteau in that environment to check its status, focus areas, and findings.

  1. Connect one source using the guides below and verify a known record with SQL.
  2. Open Cousteau and create a focus area with a concrete title, such as Checkout errors.
  3. Add guidelines describing the relevant tables, business definitions, and signals to investigate. Add shared knowledge for context that should apply beyond this focus area.
  4. Review the focus area's task and findings as investigations run. The global investigation is scheduled every six hours.

Users with permission to manage bots can enable or disable Cousteau from its menu. Disabling pauses its tasks and triggers; enabling resumes the global task and active focus areas. Archive a focus area when it no longer needs monitoring.

Verify an investigation

Check the task's latest run and open a finding. Confirm the source tables, time range, and evidence against a direct SQL query. A waiting for data state means you should verify the connected source before expecting findings. A run without a finding is not proof that no issue exists.

Troubleshooting

  • Waiting for data: query the source in the same environment and confirm that it contains usable records.
  • No recent runs: check whether Cousteau is disabled and inspect its task status.
  • Findings miss business context: add relevant knowledge and make the focus-area guidelines more specific.
  • Enable or edit controls are unavailable: ask an administrator to check your permissions.
