# Existing dashboards

Data apps replace dashboards for new work. You can still view and edit existing dashboards. [Build a data app](/docs/data-apps/build.md) for new analyses.

**Dashboards** are collections of [Insights](/docs/data-apps/insights.md), organized into a single view to monitor metrics, track KPIs, and share reports with your team.

## What are Dashboards?

Dashboards combine multiple [Insights](/docs/data-apps/insights.md) (visualizations, metrics, tables) into a unified layout:

- **Widgets**: add insights, text annotations, and grouped sections
- **Grid layout**: arrange and resize widgets freely
- **Variables**: filter all widgets at once with shared parameters

## Dashboard Variables

Variables let you parameterize your entire dashboard:

- **Shared filters**: apply date ranges or segments across all insights
- **Dynamic values**: switch between different dimensions or metrics
- **Variable mapping**: connect dashboard variables to individual insight parameters

When you change a variable, all linked widgets update together.

## Tasks on dashboards

Attach a [task](/docs/automation/tasks.md) to a dashboard to check it on a schedule and deliver findings through [notifications](/docs/automation/notifications.md).

## Move to a data app

Describe the existing dashboard's metrics, filters, and audience to an agent. Ask it to inspect the underlying queries and build a data app with equivalent results. Verify the calculations, then [create and test a share link](/docs/data-apps/share.md) before distributing the new app.

Turn my weekly business review dashboard into a data app with the same metrics, filters, and layout.
